What to do before we get there.

A few things genuinely reduce the damage while you wait, and none of them involve going on the roof. Don’t get on a wet roof. More people are hurt in the aftermath of a storm than during it.

Move furniture and electronics out from under the active leak, and get anything absorbent off the floor
Put a bucket down and, if the ceiling is bulging, pierce the low point with a screwdriver to let it drain in one controlled spot
Cut power to the affected area at the breaker if water is anywhere near fixtures or outlets
Photograph everything before you clean up — interior damage, standing water, and the ceiling, with timestamps
Note the date and time the leak started, which matters for tying it to a weather event
Don’t sign anything a door-knocking crew hands you while you’re dealing with an active leak

Stabilize first, repair properly second.

Emergency work is triage. We find the entry point, get the roof watertight with proper tarping — fastened and sealed, not weighted down with whatever’s in the truck — and stop the intrusion.

The permanent repair happens afterwards, on a dry roof, at a proper scope. Anyone doing a permanent repair in the rain is doing a temporary repair and charging for a permanent one.

Insurance

Emergency mitigation is usually covered.

Most homeowner policies cover reasonable emergency mitigation to prevent further damage — and most also require you to take reasonable steps to prevent it. Failing to act can affect the rest of the claim.
