Materials  /  New Braunfels, Texas

Roofing materials, compared honestly for Central Texas.

Material choice matters less than installation quality — a premium shingle installed badly will fail before a mid-range shingle installed properly. That said, the choice does change real things: how the roof handles hail, how it holds up to Texas heat, and in some cases what you pay to insure it.
The options

What each material actually changes.

Three-tab asphalt

The entry option. Flat appearance, lightest wind rating, shortest service life. Increasingly hard to justify in a hail region — the small saving up front rarely survives one significant storm.

Architectural asphalt

The default for most Central Texas homes, and for good reason. Dimensional appearance, meaningfully better wind performance, longer service life, and the widest range of manufacturer warranty options.

Impact-resistant (Class 4)

Engineered to absorb hail impact without fracturing the mat. Costs more up front. Many Texas carriers offer a premium discount for Class 4 — worth asking yours before you decide, because it changes the real number.

Standing seam metal

Longest service life by a wide margin, excellent wind performance, reflects heat well. Highest cost, and it does dent under large hail without losing function — a cosmetic outcome some homeowners mind and some don’t.

Metal shingle / stone-coated

Metal durability in a profile that reads more traditional. A middle path where an HOA or the architecture makes standing seam the wrong look.

Tile

Very long-lived and suited to certain Hill Country architecture, but heavy — many homes need a structural assessment before it’s even an option. Individual tiles are brittle under hail, though replaceable.
What matters more

The parts that decide how long any of them last.

Whatever goes on top, these are the things that actually determine the outcome, and they’re also the things cheaper bids quietly leave out:

Ventilation. An under-ventilated attic in Texas cooks shingles from underneath and can void the manufacturer warranty outright.

Flashing. New, not reused. Reused flashing is a leading cause of leaks in new roofs.

Decking. Sound sheathing underneath, with anything soft replaced before the new roof goes on.

Fastening. Correct nail count, placement, and depth for the wind rating you’re paying for. Get this wrong and the rating is theoretical.
Our position

What we’d put on our own house.

For most homes in this area, architectural asphalt from a manufacturer whose warranty we can actually offer, installed with new flashing and balanced ventilation. If your carrier gives a meaningful Class 4 discount, impact-resistant becomes worth the maths — ask them for the number before you decide.

Metal is a genuinely good choice if you’re staying in the house long enough to get the life out of it. We’ll tell you honestly whether the payback period fits your plans.

Talk through your options.

We’ll walk the roof, tell you what your house actually needs, and price the options side by side so you can compare real numbers.
